International Exchange Program for Head Prefect

Gabriel Pillay the head boy at Carter High School was accepted on KLYES (Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program). Pillay will leave in August this year to complete a 10 month exchange program in the United States. He applied to AFS (American Field Services) and explains the gruelling interview process of panel interviews, academic tests and practical tasks in groups, one of which was baking cup cakes within the group and delivering them to an Old Age Home. Whilst in the interview process, Gabriel heard that he was going to be the Head Prefect at Carter High School. This news was affirming and encouraged him to strive harder, knowing that an opportunity to study aboard would widen his horizon and be incredibly developmental.

“I look forward to being the foreigner with an accent”, laughs Gabriel. It will be my first travel abroad and without my family, but I don’t feel anxious about that for now. I will do my best when I am abroad as I know that my achievements will give positive international exposure to the school. I am going to America as an ambassador for South Africa and Carter High School, and I hope to do them both proud, and to return a better person. My motto is “make today the best day of your life, and make tomorrow better”
